Bruno Mars takes home the Album of the Year at the 2018 GrammysOn January 29, 2018 by Maybell
Bruno Mars had a big night at the 2018 Grammy Awards and topped it off by winning the biggest award of the night, Album of the Year, for his critically acclaimed album 24K Magic.
The Hawaii native snagged the honor by beating out Jay-Z, Donald Glover, Lorde, and Kendrick Lamar in the category.
“First off to the other nominees in this category…you guys are the reason i am in the studio pulling my hair out man…than you for blessing the world with your music,” he said, thanking his peers before telling a story about opening a show in Hawaii at the age of 15.
“My job was to entertain 1,000 tourists from all over the world,” he said, explaining that it wasn’t until later in life that he realized the songs he was singing from his setlist as a teen were all penned by legendary songwriters Babyface, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, or Teddy Riley.
He went on to explain that those songs brought people together from all over the world and he wanted to invoke that same feeling with his album 24k Magic. Mars went on to dedicate the award to those songwriters he named.
It’s safe to say, despite the excitement about the diversity of this category, reactions for his win were a mixed bag.
